Born on August 27, 1949 in Mühlheim an der Ruhr, Germany.
Since 1998 living in Zandvoort, the Netherlands.
Wolfgang Stein is a self-taught man. His first studio was in Mühlheim an der Ruhr, in which he painted figuratively in the first ten years. Although he was successful with that, he had the feeling that he was stuck in his own idiom. He wanted to be freer, more open.
In the last few years his paintings are more abstract and spontaneous. He is not only inspired by the things and events around him, the spiritual world is also a source of inspiration. His works are characterized by light sources, structures and contrasting colors.
“I think for a long time about what I will paint and how I can shape it. Which means and resources I can use to achieve my goal. But during the proces I come into a kind of intoxication and the performance arises automatically. The painting determines when it is finished, not me.”
“I call my paintings meditative tangible art. Of course, I hope that the viewer feels something when he sees my work, but I also hope that visually impaired people get a good feeling by touching my paintings.”Wolfgang Stein
